Why are leaders taking advantage of Obama’s inauguration?

It is only 16 days since the year begun but things have started on a very sad note in Kenya.

At the moment, the government is busy lobbying for food as 10 million of its citizens face looming hunger as experts continue to predict even harder times as the year goes by.

Of course the fact that Obama will be inaugurated on 20th of this month gives Kenya a reason to celebrate and be proud but sad on the other hand. A high profile delegation is now on a crash program making travel arrangements to the US to at least share the cake as the president elect officially takes over the White House.

We have all reasons as a nation to feel honored as “one of our own” takes the reigns of the most powerful nations in the world but we feel cheated and betrayed as our leaders have blown the whole issue out of proportion. It’s only logical that Obama would even feel proud and honored if our leaders seriously considered the plight of citizens facing hunger before making exaggerated budgets in the name of attending his inauguration which they can watch on TV from here the same way they will do it there.

Obama’s father native village Kogelo in Western Kenya has proved wise enough as the locals are upbeat making their own plans to share the moment with him back at home with song and dance.
Traditional elders of Kogelo village say the feast would be used to showcase the Luo culture and market the region as a tourist attraction.

A 14-member committee has been instituted to plan the events leading to the inauguration including traditional dances, wrestling and a display of Luo material culture and speeches from guest politicians and community elders. A giant screen is to be mounted at the local Barack Obama Primary School grounds, where the local activities will be taking place to allow people to monitor the swearing-in proceedings live from the US.

Four bulls, 10 goats and 30 chickens will be slaughtered to feed guests to crown the day. Highly expected on the menu is the local chang’aa brew, a highly potent traditional form of spirit popular in western Kenya and a favorite of the poor.

Thanks John, but imagine the whole thing has just been misunderstood by our leaders can you imagine they are going all the way to the USA to watch the ceremony on TV courtesy tax payers money, i mean why cant they do it here and send a reasonable number. Recently an EX- MP donated a TV to the govenment saying that maybe it dint have a good screen no wonder its move to sponsor people to go to the US, you know the whole issue seemed like a joke but this person was trying to drive a serious point which was ignored all together. Kenya cannot afford to misuse money at such a needy time and if a government cannot feed its people it has no reason of celebrating other country’s success.

african politicians don’t mind the state of affairs of their own people. They all live in luxury and satisfaction, regardless of whether their own people are living in hunger.

Take for instance our president, he has just acquired a brand new jet! Now, am not saying that this is bad but its at the wrong time!! Global financial crisis, poverty allover the place and more bad times predicted ahead. Now this money would at least be put to some good use for now to cushon the economy & country.http://www.monitor.co.ug/artman/publish/sun_news/Museveni_gets_Shs88bn_jet_78409.shtml

Let’s pray and hope that the good Lord we all learn to feel the pain our neighbours are feeling and help each other more, till then, will we really speak of love & democracy!

Some of us feel the same way here, Rose. I personally did not vote for Obama, (because of politics not race)...and although I am delighted that this country was able to overcome some of its wretched racist past and voted a Black man to lead this country, the amount of money being spent on the inauguration (when the U.S. and the rest of the world is in an economic crisis).. is shameful. Apparently this will be the most expensive inauguration ever. And please realize, I would complain about the cost whoever had been elected.

I also complained about the shameful amount of money all the presidential candidates spent (especially Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama) during the campaign.

But our elected officials should not be spending taxpayer money anywhere in the world, on frivilous things such as inaugurations.

Sorry, but it’s the way I feel.

I do pray though that Obama, as many are hoping, can help this country and the rest of the world.

time will tell.

Hi Incognito! Thanks for your comment, I am glad you have noted this also , you know what we would not complain if all this would happen courtesy their pockets,it is so shameful that people continue to die of hunger as our leaders dine and wine at our expense, the whole issue has hit Kenya big time.

Hey Rose, Unfortunately this is a problem in all countries and all political systems, including communism and socialism.  The ones who lead are the ones with all the power and money. At least in democratic, capitalist societies, those who want more money can work hard to get it, though it often corrupts people.  Sad. Blessings,
