Recently when BBC carried a story that Kenya could face worse crises in the next general election than witnessed in 2007, leaders were quick to dismiss the story as unfounded rumors well set to place the country’s image at disrepute.
But going by what has been witnessed recently in Eldoret which was the epitome of the post election violence, as well as Nairobi, any peace loving citizen of this country has all reasons to worry now that we are a few years away from another election that can almost be predicted to be bloody.
It is such a shame that even with all the efforts made to promote peaceful national cohesion among Kenyans from all tribes that we can still witness a recurrence of the enmity that almost brought the country to its knees.
More so, its with much disgust that we are forced to watch our leaders take us back to the drawing board instead of guiding the country towards democracy.
I was shocked to hear a honorable member of parliament the other day declaring in a public rally that “every man for himself but God for us all” demystifying why also one of their own (tribe) can also become the country’s chief executive. So what if one of their own doesn’t make it to the helm?
Recently during my cousin’s burial ceremony, the reverend who officiated the service, to encourage the bereaved, he narrated the ordeal he went through having been caught in between the PEV and by the virtue of him being a Kikuyu.
His wife was burnt to death inside his house which was in the outskirts of Eldoret which were also terribly affected by the chaos. He was not able to salvage any property since the fight broke in a flush and the only thing one could do was run for dear life but his wife was locked in the house by the arsonists who later torched it ensuring that no one came to her rescue.
It was such a painful encounter, he says, but what would be worse is a repeat of the same since more lives would be lost. He is among other many people who till date live with the scars left behind by the chaos but the only thing that we should always have in our minds is that we don’t have a spare country once done that will be the end.
