“Aaah wee mzee usituletee noma hapa, ukiingia hii mathree haukusikia ina ngoma,” meaning - you old man stop bothering our peace when you boarded this vehicle you didn’t realize it had music?
This was the answer when an old man requested a conductor of a PSV operating within the city to reduce the volume of the loud music which the vehicles are fond of playing which for sure is tormenting to not so young men and women.
I felt for the old man but this was beyond me. This was not the first incident I have encountered and especially here in the city where old men are forced to confine into the youths way of doing things.
Some music is just too unbearable to such people who have also to use the vehicles and we cannot do without our parents who of course cannot be our age.
It is such a disgust that some of these Matatus(Vehicles) play obscene music videos and if you dare make a request for something decent you are sure of getting a fare share of insults from the driver to the conductor and some of their clients who are mostly quite young.
Some of these vehicles have code names such as Adults only and Members only just to ward off anyone with a decent mind or anyone against their course.
Recently a parent was baying for the blood of a young man said to be a conductor of a certain Matatu who allegedly impregnated her daughter. This is not the only one sometimes back we heard of complaints that a good number of high school girls from a certain route and using specific Matatus delivered babies before completing high school thanks to the ‘generous’ drivers and conductors who would often pay for the girls’ bus fares. Too bad for the girls.
The youth make a larger population of the Kenyan society but this does not mean that we should make life unbearable to the elderly in our society. We need them and all we can give is respect and love.
