Island row: Museveni remarks, a great shame!

Kenyans should stop whining over the ownership of Migingo Island and instead divert the energy into some constructive issues. At the moment Kenya and Uganda are engaged in a high profile tussle over the tiny Island whose bone of contention is its richness in big fish.

The whole controversy is now turning nasty after Uganda’s President Museveni remarks that Migingo Island might be in Kenya while its waters are in Uganda.

This he said during an interview with the BBC where he went further and used abusive words directed to Luos (famous tribe in Kenya) who seem to be so much attached to the Island it being closer to them.

This is what Museveni said: “ The Island is in Kenya, the water is in Uganda. But the Wajaluos ( Luos) are mad, they want to fish here but this is Uganda hii nchi huru(this is a sovereign country). Mpaka inazunguka kisiwa (the border surrounds the island) one foot into the water and you are in Uganda,” Museveni said this with a lot of confidence.

This same person a month ago termed the row “shameful” but his recent words state otherwise. The president is on record boasting of how he is happy that he has managed to bar Kenyans from fishing from the island.

“ I have been telling those Jaluos (Luos) who were rioting wanango’a reli (uprooting railway) … see I want to discuss with them.. if we implement this hakuna njaluo atavua samaki (no Luo will fish) in this water,” he added.

Even though the survey aimed at resolving its ownership has been launched, the whole idea has been thrown into jeopardy with Museveni’s remarks that outrightly depict how unwilling he would be to cede the Island in good faith if the results state otherwise.

However my sincere congratulations to president Mwai Kibaki who has all along maintained silence and calm over the row and left the matter to be resolved diplomatically.

Shame on all the Members of Parliament (Kenya) who were quick to respond to Museveni’s remarks, lets wait for the jury to give the verdict.

it is amazing how a person being called by the world as president can be petty! Museveni is moriband! he has lost it and so now he is expressing hatred and personal vendetta agaisnt an ethnic community.

You know at first i thought Kibaki was letting us down by keeping quite over the matter but i think instead of uttering unwise words that bellittles someone’s character silence is the best thing to do.

When the government of Kenya has failed to protect Kenyans and defend our territorial boundaries, the only alternative is to remove that government from the very existence.

Kenyans must rise to the occassion, regardless of tribe to pass a vote of no confidence in this useless Kibaki government.

Ok, but we would rather silence than hateful words that Museveni used having in mind that Luo is one community that has really supported Museveni, i hear some even voted for him.

Again I dont like the way he speaks calling our Luo Kenyans ‘Jaluo’ it’s bad and that will promote tribalism and tension between Ugandans and Kenyans esp. those living on the border.

Yah that is the thing, i mean how can a whol;e head of state get out of order like that and the next day say that his words were taken out of context while he is on record calling Kenyan Luos ”mad njaluos”

the most unanswered question is, who has been collecting taxes or delivering services on this island? Why does the fighting have to start now and not several years even before the british left?
