'I have a right to do away with the foetus'

It’s such a nice, peaceful and cool evening, why don’t I grab this chance and join my women friends whom we haven’t met for almost a whole week now.

We do not have a formal meeting point, so the only neutral point we can hook up at is in one of our friend’s salon at the heart of the city convenient to each of us.

This is a unique evening though characterized by unusual stories. Politics, lifestyle, and of course the boyfriend/husband topic that never misses in most women conversations were not subject to our discussion this day.

I have been unable to brand the issue negative/positive since I am a woman and no one knows what awaits me.

Abortion: This was our subject of discussion. Even though we disagree on different occasions, things would never get worse than they were this day. Darryl, one of our friends dominated the whole discussion since we had not seen her for almost 2 months and she would always give excuses whenever we asked her to join us, only to realize later that she had a month old baby boy.

This is her fourth child which she had not planned for. We learnt this from Susan who joined us minutes later with the shocking news since none of us was aware of her pregnancy.

According to Susan, Darryl acted foolishly and she says “I would never give birth to an unplanned baby with the economic hardships the world is experiencing.

How can I behave like a foolish woman and sit back while there are alternatives, doctors are all over and willing to assist a needy woman, and money is not an excuse since we can fund raise and help someone out,” Susan adds.

Jacinta, interjects saying “my husband would not listen to me if I just woke up one day and told him I am pregnant, we have two kids who are already a heavy burden to us, I would rather die trying than face the agony, these are not the days when abortion was a big deal, women married and unmarried are doing it without fear, we even know of professionals who have specialized on this.”

Three quarters of those present and married agreed to the idea of abortion but simplified it as ‘sanitizing the womb’. Abortion has been and remains to be a contentious issue in our societies with rifts ensuing whenever the issue is debated.

It remains illegal in Kenya but carried out in large numbers, these women are my friends, I cannot disagree and at the same time agree with them.

Should we call it a developed world and brush off the issue?
