I find this rather disturbing though I would not be quick to make any tangible comment and this to me is the stuff nightmares are made of.
I read this story in one of our local daily and still I cannot comprehend how people would exhume the remains of the dead in the name of searching for a cure to ailments affecting his/her family members. Africans are proud and they never miss a chance of boasting how good they are at carrying on important traditions from one generation to the other but some are so retrogressive and archaic.
Some communities also perform traditional rituals to appease the dead which is very common in Western province. I do not understand the logic behind all these though the old man who proudly showed his mothers remains says he was cured some years back after exhuming the her remains after he got sick which also extended to other family members who were sick. For all they are worth, we need to do away with some traditions.

That said, yes, we all must be sensitive to tradition. Just as long as they don’t seek to exhume other people’s dead relatives.
Ultimately some traditions are deeply rooted in superstition. The whole thing with the albinos beings killed in Tanzania - that is just ludicrous. We would do well to be aware of who benefits. Think of the so-called preachers in Nigeria who find a quick way to fame and fortune through telling parents that their child is possessed of the devil and can only be healed through a variety of ridiculous, cruel and dangerous practises. Unfortunately there will always be naive people who will fall prey to such charlatans and it is perhaps precisely in allowing rituals such as the exhumation of dead relatives to pass unquestioned that we open the door to all manner of inanity and inhumanity.
